Church of Santo Stefano
In the heart of Menaggio village, the Church of San Stefano – open daily – is a place of worship with very ancient origins. It was built from 1618 onwards on the remains of a previous Romanesque church, with an orientation opposite to that of the original building.
Facade and InteriorsThe church façade features a rose window and a niche with a statue. The bell tower, dating to the 19ᵗʰ century, has a square base with a copper onion dome and five bells. The layout includes three naves and six side chapels. Inside, visitors can admire frescoes painted in 1899 by Luigi Tagliaferri. In the left nave is a copy of Madonna and Child with an Angel, a renowned painting by Bernardino Luini. The original is currently displayed at the Louvre Museum in Paris. |
